Sandscape Garden

Concept

Sandscape Garden is a kinetic art installation merging Japanese tradition with technology.
Japanese zen gardens are well-known for their minimalistic appeal: they inspire tranquility through the careful placement of rocks and the brushing of sand into intricate designs.
Reinterpreting these principles, Sandscape Garden does something similar, but all on its own. Spend a few minutes contemplating it, and you will see a metal sphere, guided by a hidden robot, tracing serpentine patterns across the sand. The robot's movements are controlled by an ant-inspired algorithm that continuously calculates optimal paths. As one pattern finishes, it's erased, making way for a new design—a cycle of creation and renewal.
We've partnered with Ueyakato Landscape, Kyoto-based garden masters with over 170 years of experience, to merge their time-honored techniques with cutting-edge tech.
The artwork creates a unique contrast between the movement of the spheres and the stillness of the surrounding space, offering a new perspective on the centuries-old dry landscape garden tradition.
